Trillium Project (501c3) is a small, yet powerful arts and culture organization that introduces community-based projects in three primary focus areas: art, advocacy, and Appalachia.
Their work focuses on addressing the unmet needs of the community through creative opportunities and cultural place-making by commissioning public arts projects created by and for marginalized populations.

Projects are specifically designed to employ and empower those who have historically been denied access to large-scale public arts projects - those who identify as LGBTQ+, BIPOC, disabled, youth, aging, and in recovery.

Appalachian Visual Poetry is a brand new initiative that fosters creative partnerships between local artists, poets, lyricists, storytellers, and their communities, to create a series of dynamic visual works that capture the diversity of small Appalachian communities. Murals explore themes of culture, heritage, self-expression, identity, social injustice, sexuality, and more.

Art has the power to transform spaces, communities, and people. It can address social issues, initiate conversations, make comment on systemic and structural issues, all while activating and encouraging residents to invest in building creative, innovative, and compassionate communities- communities that reflect the heart and hope of those who call it home.

Take pART is a multi-year community-centered and led art project using crosswalk murals to empower, educate, and enrich Appalachian communities.

2023 - Introducing community-created crosswalk murals in areas of impact and interest including Hilltop, North End, East End, and the ACID District
2024 - Introduce interactive arts and literature elements and expand on existing crosswalk murals
2025 - Co-coordinate a community art-making event in collaboration with Scioto Literary and the Appalachian Foothills Festival

Residents of Portsmouth are encouraged to submit crosswalk designs and join our project team to create dynamic, inclusive arts practices that address the unmet needs of our communities.
